Policy Work in France

French MP's Dimitri Houbron and Corinne Vignon drew the attention of the Minister of Agriculture and Food to the conditions of fish farms. In order for the rearing conditions to be optimal, the fish must have access to an enriched environment, with regular monitoring of water quality parameters (oxygen, pH, carbon, salinity, ammonia and temperature). The space available to the fish, as well as their density, are also a determining factor in their well-being. Indeed, high densities can cause injury and damage to the health of the fish.

Scientific work seems to show that a stimulating environment has a positive effect on the well-being of the animals because it allows the expression of natural behaviours, cognitive development and seems to reduce stress. However, in fish farms, the environment of the ponds or cages is often poor or even devoid of any facilities. A more regular control of water quality, as well as an enrichment of the living environment, could improve living conditions, but also the quality of the fish, benefiting producers and consumers. Thus, he would like to know what measures the Minister plans to implement in order to improve the living conditions of farmed fish.
