In 2025, Aquatic Life Institute accelerated systems-change for aquatic animals across three lenses, Recognition, Protection, Prioritization, to move welfare from an afterthought to a decision-driver in the global seafood industry.
ALI advances change at the structural level, where policies, frameworks, and industry norms shape the treatment of aquatic animals. We believe true welfare progress depends on transforming these systems, not just alleviating their most visible symptoms.
Aquatic animals represent the overwhelming majority of animals in global food systems, yet their welfare remains largely absent from sustainability agendas and policy frameworks.
Aquatic Life Institute exists to change that.
Our 2025 Annual Report examines how ALI brought the invisible majority into focus throughout our defined Spheres of Influence this year. We invite you to take a deep dive in the featured case studies, which illustrate how ALI exerts scientific expertise, global coordination power, institutional credibility, and cross-sector relevance to achieve impact.
The report also explains our “Upstream Influence” approach to reform that addresses root causes; shifting policies, systems, and norms so problems are prevented rather than merely managed. ALI’s work focuses on where the rules are written and the incentives are set, turning better practice from exceptional to expected.
Every program and project we undertake ties back to our overarching mission of creating a more just and sustainable food system by championing the recognition, protection, and prioritization of aquatic animal welfare; anchored in science, integrated across supply chains, and entrenched in global wellbeing.
