The Invisible Majority
Aquatic animals represent the overwhelming majority of animals in global food systems, yet their welfare remains largely absent from sustainability agendas and policy frameworks.
Aquatic Life Institute exists to change that.
This giving season, join us in bringing The Invisible Majority into focus. Your donation can reach billions of overlooked aquatic animals by supporting the systems-level transformation we have planned for 2026.

many animals?

The state of the Invisible Majority
Every year, trillions of finfish are farmed and wild-caught—an astonishing 13 to 22 times more than all farmed land animals combined. It's estimated that another 630 billion farmed shrimp are slaughtered annually for food, a species increasingly recognized for their sentience.
These figures highlight the immense scale of suffering for aquatic animals within our global food system, underscoring the urgent need for improved welfare and protection. As the only organization working on institutional transformation for aquatic animals in global food systems, Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) is dedicated to driving lasting change for these trillions of aquatic animals worldwide.
As we review our progress for 2025, we’re highlighting case studies that illustrate how ALI has helped make aquatic animals, The Invisible Majority, more visible this year.
At ALI, we believe the most scalable and durable improvements for aquatic life come from upstream influence.
Especially in a sector as vast, global, and under-regulated as aquatic production, upstream levers such as standards and policy have the potential to improve conditions for orders of magnitude more animals, faster. Our programs, developed to drive change for the most overlooked animals, focus on three interconnected pillars of impact - recognition, protection, and prioritization.
Instead of treating welfare as an afterthought, we’re working to hardwire it into the rules and policies that shape our food systems. Explore the three feature case studies below to find out more about how we fought for The Invisible Majority across the globe in 2025, and keep an eye out for ALI’s annual report for more case studies in December.
Case studies
Recognition: Making aquatic welfare visible and legitimate in global dialogues
Protection: Converting welfare norms into formal standards and laws
Prioritization: Embedding welfare into high-level decisions
Focusing on 2026
As we look to 2026, our goal is clear: ensure aquatic animal welfare is recognized, prioritized, and protected in the frameworks that govern global food systems. We will do this by further shaping public perception, influencing the decision-making of global entities like the UN, European Commission, major certification bodies, and corporations, and establishing aquatic welfare as an essential, non-negotiable dimension of how the world defines responsible food systems.
By supporting ALI’s work, you can ensure that aquatic life doesn’t remain invisible in the systems that shape our food, our planet, and our ethics. During this giving season, your donation can help turn our 2025 momentum into lasting reform, helping us improve the lives of billions of aquatic animals every year.
Double your impact
Thanks to Mobius, every new or increased monthly gift made until January 31 will be matched for the entirety of 2026. That means if you start giving $10 a month, Mobius will contribute an additional $120 (the full year’s value of your gift) directly to ALI. If you increase your current monthly gift, the increase will also be matched for the year ahead, dollar for dollar.
This is a chance to help twice as many animals every month and make once invisible lives impossible to ignore.
“ACE proudly recommends Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) as an excellent giving opportunity. ALI carries out a variety of short-term and long-term strategies aimed at reducing the significant suffering experienced by both farmed and wild-caught aquatic animals. These animals are among the most neglected in animal advocacy, despite their numbers being greater than all land animals combined. ALI uses robust logic to develop their programs and has a strong track record of success. ”
