Doing Blue Foods Right: Safeguards for an Equitable, Humane, and Sustainable Transition
A COP30 Brief by the Just Food Transition Network
Aquatic Life Institute is one of the founding members of the Just Food Transition Network, which advocates for phasing out industrial animal production. Our role is to bring blue foods into the transition, ensuring that we move away from inhumane forms of fishing and aquaculture and towards a global food system that is equitable, humane, and climate-resilient.
As blue foods are increasingly framed as “climate solutions,” now is the time to draw a clear line: only equitable, humane, and ecologically restorative aquaculture and fishing deserve that label. That is why the Just Food Transition Network is launching a new brief at COP30, titled Doing Blue Foods Right: Safeguards for an Equitable, Humane and Sustainable Transition - to remind the world that our food transition must include the ocean, but not at the expense of people, animals, or the planet.
We aim to reshape how blue foods are included in global climate and food policy, from a production-first lens to a justice-centered one. Our new brief gives negotiators concrete safeguards to ensure blue foods genuinely contribute to 1.5°C goals while advancing equity and welfare for people and animals.
