The Animal Rights Center Japan (ARCJ) joined the Aquatic Animal Alliance in December 2020 and has translated our aquatic animal welfare guide into Japanese, equipping the aquatic animal welfare movement with a critical advocacy tool that can be utilized in a highly relevant market: Japan.

ARCJ is a non-profit organization at the forefront of the animal adovacy movement in Japan, whose mission is to eliminate the exploitation and suffering of animals, violence and discrimination against vulnerable species, and environmental problems caused by factory farming. They have been engaged in investigative reporting and public opinion polls about animal welfare issues and bringing meaningful welfare improvements since the 1980’s.

Since 2014, ARCJ was already engaged in raising awareness about aquatic animal welfare issues, a topic that has been highly neglected by the animal welfare movement. Japan is one of the largest consumers of fish products in the world, and while the majority of fish consumed in Japan is wild-caught, demand for farmed fish is rising.

Which is why we are at a critical juncture in Japan to ensure that the supply of farmed fish follows high welfare standards, and are absolutely thrilled to have ARCJ join the Alliance, bringing their expertise and insight in this important market as we continue working with major certification labelling schemes to define and improve welfare indicators for aquatic animals.
