Real progress for aquatic animals within the global food system requires collaboration that crosses borders, disciplines, and perspectives. In 2020, this understanding led Aquatic Life Institute to establish the Aquatic Animal Alliance (AAA), a global coalition that now brings together more than 190 organizations across 75 countries.

AAA’s Mission:
To unite and strengthen a global movement for aquatic animal welfare by coordinating collective action and aligning efforts to drive measurable change across policy, markets, and standards.
The AAA’s vision is to enable a globally aligned network of organizations to drive coordinated, measurable improvements in aquatic animal welfare. Achieving this vision requires translating collective effort into coordinated action across regions, sectors, and disciplines and driving engagement across stakeholders to ensure consistent, aligned asks that reinforce influence worldwide.
The Alliance enables coordinated initiatives that influence policy, markets, and standards. While individual organizations drive important work within their own contexts, the AAA brings these efforts together at a scale and level of consistency that cannot be achieved alone.
As the Alliance’s collective efforts progress, aquatic animal welfare will continue to become more visible, more integrated into decision-making spaces, and more clearly positioned as a priority.

Alliance-driven Progress
Octopus farming ban initiative
Harnessing local collaboration with international expertise to support the introduction of national legislation to ban octopus farming and the first bill in Latin America (Chile) to nationally prohibit this practice, and a similar bill in Mexico, helping establish a global policy precedents
Defunding octopus farming
Coordinating global advocacy efforts with 160+ organizations that call on governments to halt public funding for octopus farming, contributing to shifts in policy language and funding considerations, including in Chile and New Zealand.
High-impact global advocacy submissions
In 2025 alone, the AAA and ALI delivered 10 coordinated submissions to governments, corporations, and certification bodies, each backed by approximately 160 organizations, demonstrating strong global alignment and influence, including Feedback to the Sustainable Seafood Coalition and the AAA letter to the UN Ocean Conference.
Policy influence in national aquaculture strategies
Sending recommendations in collaboration with our local AAA partners to government aquaculture policy discussions, including in Israel and Nepal, where advocacy helped shift language to require consideration of aquatic animal welfare and environmental impacts.
